A lot of witches I know actually perform divination before casting a spell - to see if it is fortuitous to perform the spell in the first place.

Watershield, I may not agree with your perspective and do agree with a67driana, but this has also been one of the most interesting threads I have read on any site. I was discussing these matters with a good friend over the weekend and now see better the different directions that she was coming from at least.

I'm not following. What about the above makes this related to "darker forces?" Negative energy may very well be undesirable (for a great number of reasons) but I wouldn't call it "darker."

No, it means you shouldn't ignore the other side of things. I'm a martial artist, I know HOW to hurt people, but my art also teaches how to avoid getting into confrontations in the first place, as well as extracting yourself from them.

Just because you know how something works, it doesn't stand to reason that you MUST therefore use it.

If you yourself don't know how to curse, how would you help someone who HAS been cursed and has asked your aid in the matter?

At the risk of being called a big meanie, that's wishful thinking. You aren't perfect and you aren't all knowing. So chances are that you HAVE harmed others. Be it through doing a healing (which lets them continue over working their body till some worse ailment comes along) or helping someone get a job which in turn deprives others of that same job.

A) see above and B) that's a logical fallacy there. You're thinking in black and white terms here, which is inherently limiting.

Can I just point out that there is nothing wrong with feeling negative. More often than not anger, jealousy, hate, pain etc etc can give us the kick up the pants to react in a positive way. It's all about perspective ( I think WS allready said that ) and how YOU react to a given situation.
I have to say that I have a real problem when discussing good and bad magic.
Why do YOU cast spells?
I know that when I cast spells it is to improve MY life and my situation and it is purely selfish. I NEVER cast for other people. Why should I?
I don't want the ramifications of someone elses life being on my conscious. Everyone is capable of changing their own lives and their own circumstances due to how they percieve situations.
Good and bad/ light and dark magic just doesn't have a place in my life.
I'll cast a spell when I want and how I want and I will live with the results of that.

I agree with desladon that it is all in your intention and that judging dark from light is not neccisary. The way I view magick is not as a force with polarity but as a tool that can be used for anything. for example magick could be compared to a hammer which could be used to build a house, which would be percieved as good, or it could be used to smash someones skull, which would be percieved as bad or it could be used to make a thumping sound which would not be considered good or bad. also summoning dark forces is not always to do ill. Aleister crowley summoned demons in boleskin house in loch ness for the purpose of persuading them to do good, unfortunately the rite was inturrupted and the house is still haunted today though his intentions were 'good'

for the most part i agree, but you may call upon a neutral energy. through negative intent you could corrupt said energy into something of malevolence.

Dark forces are only dark because you choose not to understand them. In my experience they are quite powerful and not the sort of thing to try and fight. I myself call upon demonic names in my rituals and no harm has come upon me yet.
