I know this topic crops up from time to time and the general consensus seems to be that describing magic in words is quite difficult.
Never to shy in the face of difficulty - I thought we could all give our own personal perspective on what, exactly, magic is.
Remember these are our opinions, there is no right or wrong answer.

Wow... difficult to explain with words is right! To be very basic and to the point, I think of magic as using your will to affect a change in your world to reap a benefit of some sort.(I think anyone purposefully seeking to reap negative or harmful rewards for themselves are in the minority here.) For example, using magic to get a job, heal a sick person, bring love into one's life, empowering our other senses... etc. The art of magic, to me, is equal to the purposeful expasion of the useage of the mind.

In my view, I see space as a vast never ending fabric. It's surface, an ocean with currents that flow in an endless dance. When we cast spells (what I call energy weaving) we create images in our minds and malipulate the currents to make subtile changes to recreate those images in the fabric of space. Just as an artist creates an image one stroke at a time, lasting magic is a process of slow manipulations.

I see magick as manipulation of the energies around us to get a specified result

Magic to me is about living in harmony with the universal energy that connects everything and everyone.

The principle and art of magic is a person making the realms of thought manifest in as much as anything that can be "thought" can be made to appear in the material world, and we as humans are the bridge between the worlds able to give the metaphysical a physical form. Magic is all around us even practiced by many that do not know that they are doing it! Anything that has been invented once belonged to the realm of thought. The magic was the practice of de-coding the recipe that would make it manifest in the physical world. Magic is the formula! Discuss!!!!

in my belief, magick is re-directing the universal force of energy to be attuned to us in order to balance our needs and desire. However, this only holds true if we know how to control ourselves as some becomes "addicted to it" and mishandle this energy force to attain their every whims...

For me magic lives.
It is physical and spiritual. Its something that has to be experienced and lived, its not a story to be told.

There a two ways of doing something - by physical effort, and by metaphysical effort. One is normal, the other is magik. Sleight of hand tricks are physical, and therefore magic, not magik. (sometimes spelled magick) That magik can cause something physical to happen, does not make the magik physical, just the result of it - as with all aspects of the Pagan Paths, magik is what we make it to be for us - I use it daily, for things that I have no possibility of ever achieving by physical effort - I make safe people in danger, I stop something I see that is going to harm someone, I alter the way things happen - this is normal magical effort, to me - others, even some who can do things, regard me as anything from very blessed, to totally evil - dependent upon their perspective.
Without Magik, I know I would not be able to manage very well - having grown up with magik part of my life, I cannot imagine life without it. It really is hard enough with magical help, I would not want to try it without.

Energy weaving(can I borrow that WaterShield? ;D) is the act of using the natural energies of the Universe to create a(n) situation/occurance/object to come about by the use of words and thoughts. Manipulating people is against my moral fiber, and should not be used unless all else fails ! To create situations in your favor can be considered magick, where some may call it coincidence; but I think there are no coincidences because things happen for a reason whether we see it that way or not (here I'm trying to sound smart and sophisticated- but we all know that's not the case! snicker ;D) So I'll be quiet ! For me, magic is the manipulation of the energy that every living and non-living entity on this planet and in this universe and beyond, possess. I don't believe that more energy can be added without taking from some (one) thing first. I believe that when a living thing dies, their energy goes into something that actually needs more energy to maintain or survive. I believe that magic happens by the intentional manipulation of energy, but that it also can happen randomly. For instance, the energy of a plant growing or something evolving over time. Both of those things need energy to happen and I believe that that changing of energy is magic as well.
Just my two pence.
