Magic is energy plus intent, I agree with Dara it might not always be conscious intent, the plant grows thru the intent of the universe so I don't know that I'd say random, for people it might be subconscious intent. I agree with Watershield and Hedge re. energy everything is fundamentally connected like a spider web, when we harmoniously focus our intent we can influence the universal energies and blend it with our own. So spells, rituals, visualization are all examples of ways to focus our intent. Energy can come from inside us or flow thru us from the universe.
I've seen two ways to magically work with energy, first is the ardous path of the alchemist or ceremonial magician a la Bardon or Crowley perhaps the path of power, purposefully developing one's own energy and intent to a high level by following a very focused path not necessarily bad but involves the magician doing their own will and using their own energy which they have cultivated.
The other is the more transformative shamanic path this one also might involve some preset rituals but much more free flowing a surrender to the flow of channeling universal energies from the outside and merging your own energy and intent with the universe to become a conduit- and surrender can be much more difficult for modern people than working complicated rituals- the second one is the path of love, the Bushmen believe any time a healer or shaman feels drained and low energy after a working it's a sign they aren't highly enough tapped into the Big Love- and correct me if I'm wrong think being tapped into love and universal energies is a principle of Reiki too. I many young people tend to be naturals at the second path since their minds are maybe more open to those universal energies and flow in a less regimented fashion than adults. Also one if many good reasons to keep young people surrounded by love and positivity, with high grade stuff flowing less likely to deplete their own internal energy.

I think the evil eye is a perfect example of your theory, this magick can be used subconsciously or with intent.

So basically Dara, your saying energy is in perfect balance infinity? Thats a nice way of putting it...And a very intallectual one. Yeah, I guess that's what I'm saying. I had never thought of it how you put it, but thanks for putting it that way. Energy is in perfect balance as far as I see things. Every bit of energy has it's place. I believe that random wasn't the best word for me to use. I probably should have said (in regards to a flower growing), automatic perhaps.

I used to say magick involved will and intent, but I'm not so sure anymore. I like Hedgie's idea about learning to live in harmony with nature. Magick is learning how.
I practice what I call Reiki Magick in that I try to bring healing and harmony to any and all situations rather than trying to manipulate or control anything.
On the other hand, I might be along for the ride, but I'm one heck of a backseat driver!
I read a lot of Starhawk's works and like her ideas that true communication and magick is learning how life interacts with other life and learning to become an active and beneifical part of the web of life. Learning to live in harmony and in the flow of life instead of bracing against it. She says magick is learning to see life's patterns and learning to weave ourselves into the best pattern to achieve our goal.

See I know everything and everyone is connected, like a web, and everything and everyone effects that web. My magic these days focuses on all the signs and daily occurrences that happen to me and me looking at the bigger picture. I have asked the universe for help in the past and the universe has delivered. There was no circle cast, no incense burnt, no crystal, no wand no nothing. Just me and my inherent desire that the universe help me. Of course, I wasn't handed anything on a plate. I took notice of the daily occurences that were happening around me and when I saw an opportunity to aid me - I jumped at it. I wish I was eloquent enough to be able to put it into words like Stahawk.

I see magic as my own personal raw and unadulterated power. However, I'm not the only one with power, I share this universe with other beings. I understand the burden of sacrifice and of the joy of giving, the necessity to defend oneself and to communicate clearly to others, with regards to their interactions with me, what I consider acceptable and what I do not.
With regards to power, I feel any kind of power (personally I consider power and magic to be one and the same) is useless if one can be moved to exercise it rashly.
My view is that, I feel power is important and necessary, however, true power can only be gained by control, avoiding greed, and by establishing good relations with other beings without being a pushover.
I've noticed that powerful people really can stay out of each other's way.
I think I'm writing this because, although I adore harmony, greatly adore it. Harmony is sometimes reached by negotiation.

For me 'magic' is effectign the without from within. Be it changing how I view things, getting up to change the burned light bulb. Or casting a spell to,,,, whatever. But it is also about realizing and accepting the responsibility of those acts and being able to take them upon yourself. If you slip off that chair whn you reach too far up to get to the over head lamp or cause a flood when you did not properly set the limits in your mind for the rain you wanted, it is still on you. Each act must be wieghted and its after effects at least considered. The always present plus AND minus have to be looked for then looked at. Even an act of charity.

Just finished reading one of Lyall Watson's books, and he says magick is whatever means one employs to get the job done.
Made me laugh but I like that.

Magic is so much less than what most people think it is.
Be it some Roman Catholic mass or a Wiccian High rite or someone burning insence and chanting over a cast iron pot....that's all drama, smoke and mirrors.
The magic is all around us. It just a matter of seeing it.

Magic is there for everyone with eyes to see (and those without eyes too).

It is kind of fun.

Over the past few months, I have learned firsthand that the core of magick is desire fueled by emotion. Not wishful thinking or feeling blue, but standing before the Universe pouring your heart and guts out and demanding that something be done.
Works for me!
