A litttle about Samhain:
In this darkest, coldest, bleakest season, Samhain marked the onset of winter. It was a time of death, when the earth lay bare and livestock were slaughtered for the long winter ahead. The veil between this world and the otherworld was lifted, and the spirits of the dead rejoined the community in the feasting and celebrations. Bonfires were lit on hilltops for purification and symbolized the longed-for regeneration of the life-giving sun.
In some traditions, the festival of Samhain marks the beginning of the new year. Samhain (pronounced 'sow-in' or 'sow-en') means 'summer's end.' In most of the northern hemisphere, by the beginning of November summer has truly ended. The nights grow long and they days get shorter. The roads and pavements are strewn with fallen leaves as the trees strip themselves of the greenery they cannot support through the winter. Throughout winter, they will sleep and stand bare and skeletal against the dark sky.
As it is the new year, it is also traditionally a time to dedicate yourself to the path, take a magickal name, or join a coven. You may also find it a time for banishing the unwanted, as it is the last sabbat of the waning year.
Samhain is also a festival of the dead. Our Celtic ancestors knew that Samhain brought death. Winter brough snow and frost. No animals could graze. They had to feed on hay stored from the summer fields. Only a few animals could be fed through the winter. The rest were slaughtered and their meat salted. With the cold, the elders of the village were vulnerable to illness. The death rate would go up with the onset of November ~ something that is true even today.
The season of Samhain is a natural time to think about death and to remember those who have gone before. It is customary to lay a place setting at the table for family members or friends who have passed on.
Remember though that the focus is not only on death, but on the renewal of life also. Be thankful for all you have, and what is yet to come.
One way to celebrate Samhain (Halloween) is to give a party. We can invite friends and family; or we can party alone, enjoying our own space and company.
Party decorations can include pumpkins, bats, witches, brooms and fairy lights ~ whatever you like!
FOODS ASSOCIATED WITH SAMHAIN:
Pumkin soup/pie Baked potatoes Pork Fruit cake Apples Nuts
Some Pagans like to create a seasonal altar, using symbols of the season: Fallen leaves, nuts, pinecones, black and orange candles, fresh fruit, bread, orange flowers or pumpkins. It's also a nice idea to place photographs of departed loved one's on the altar.
One way of communing with departed friends and family, is to write them a letter and burn it in the Samhain fire.
The day after Samhain is a good time to tend to the graves of our ancestors. Flowers can be placed and maybe the bread from your altar can be scattered for the birds.

Deities associated with Samhain:
Goddesses: Crone, Hecate Gods: Horned Hunter, Cernnunos, Anubis

This is my first Samhain as a full witch (not just in the 'research' stage) so I will be spending it honouring my dead best friend, Toby. I have found a handy spell to let my feelings be known without stirring up lots of negative energies. But as my EUM buddies will know, I think he may already know my feelings. A lot. This is just a little more formal.

That sounds beautiful MissJ. May your time be wornderful! And yes Hedge, it is like a Beltane celebration but recall the meaning infused in Renaissance England with the expression the "little death!" Somehow, sex and Samhain fit together nicely (after all the neighbourhood kids have stopped hording our candy, of course).
Enjoy your jouissance,

I managed to get 3 mannequins for Halloween! One adult and 2 children....and they were free! The Levi jeans store kindly gave them to me <---------see hat It's not the best photo, but you get the general idea ;D I'm thinking Halloween 1 and Halloween 3 (Season of the witch). Adult ~ Michael Myers Kids ~ can have pumpkin masks on (like 'Buddy' in Halloween 3). Although, thinking about it, my original idea was a Marilyn Manson dummy (see the hat he's wearing in the pic)...his 'Smells like children' album). <---------album cover I have the children....so who knows? I could create a little group scenario...where he's holding their hands ;D he reminds me of the Child Catcher on Chitty, Chitty bang, bang.....Creepy!!!
