Witchycakes and I will be having a big Tofurky dinner and setting places for all our loved ones who've passed, including our precious little cat Elvira who left us a couple of years ago. Then we usually do lots of 'New Year's' divination.
For those who hadn't guessed, we're roomates and have been for many years now. Think Rachel & Monica from Friends, only witchy!

For those who measure by the seasons,Samhain[pronounced sow-inn}arrives with the first frost. Some plan their rite around the full moon of Scorpio that passes through Taurus. Those who work around a consistent date celebrate Samhain on 1 November with the rites beginning the evening before. Traditionally at Samhain, livestock that would not last the winter were slaughtered with ritual thanks. Samhain marks the end of summer,it is a time of sacrifice. Ahead is the winter and decisions need to be made as to what we will carry through the long cold months, what will not survive, and what must be protected and nurtured as the source of next years wealth. So the festival rite is a process of letting go beginning with an acknowledgment of what we have gained how we have changed, and who we have become, and followed by a period of mourning, knowing what we must release-and effectively letting it go. At this time, those who have died during the year are honored and gifts are given with love and thanks. Our ancestors are invited to share and the feast is blessed and offered to the earth, the spirits and all in the circle. Then the darkness of winter is welcomed in and a period of release is declared-bonfires are lit,the summer king burnt, fireworks set off and the feasting begins. It is not a Halloween celebration. And in case you wonder i have been a Druid for 25 years. Let's not turn something beautiful into an orgy of drunken stupidity.

If you take a look at page one of this thread, you'll see that I posted something very similar to yourself on the meaning of Samhain. You're right...it is a very beautiful season and we shouldn't forget the real meaning behind it. I just mingle the two celebrations (Halloween and Samhain) together on the same night. I have my own quiet celebration of Samhain, before my guests arrive. The Halloween party starts later ;D No drunken orgies? .........spoilsport!
