Using this logic, for the average practitioner, I guess the whole aspect of magic is... acknowledgment makes it real? Exactly. If you craft a spell without the belief that it's going to work....why bother? If you don't acknowledge what you're setting out to achieve, how can you draw up the energy required, and how can you visualise and focus on the desired outcome? Well, take the placebo effect for instance. You trust your doctor to make you well, don't you? Numerous studies have been done, using placebo's and the real thing. Results have shown that the placebo's do work, because the patient believed they would work, and they wanted to get well. The mind is a powerful thing, and the results can be very real. So yes, magick is all in the mind. As they say, "the most important tool in spellcrafting, is you." Of course, it also takes physical participation as well. If you craft a spell to lose weight, for instance, you're not going to be successful if you continue to eat cream cakes and chocolate. There are some things that we have no control over. The weather and the random physical actions of another, being two of them. If we had the ability to stop a bullet, then we'd all be flying around on broomsticks and zapping lightening bolts from our fingertips as well.

I think maybe we are starting to see some variance in the way different "groups" identify their use of "magic" or the energy around us.
As I see it (and this is only my opinion and expressed very simply) Weather you believe in a God, Gods Goddess or just nature;
Pagans are aware of the energy and use it in their daily lives. It's a tool to improve how they live and function.
Witches, Druids & Wiccans are also aware of the energy and use it in their daily lives, but also see it as a tool that can give positive reinforcement to others lives and outlooks. It an emotional force as opposed to a physical interaction.
There is very little separation between these three.
Occultists, Satanists, Wizards & Sorceresses are very much aware of the energy, use it in their daily lives. But they sense that it is a force that can be bent to affect not only the Physic body but the physical body as well.
In this sense, I'd have to place myself in the Occultist/Wizard category.

It an emotional force as opposed to a physical interaction. . I totally agree with you there. Projecting energy is something I do everyday, and which doesn't always inolve the elaborate ritual of 'spellcrafting' as regards the practical side ;D

but let me throw something at you with a another twist. How can you protect energy when it is all around you. Only you as yourself can tap into key items of power and energy be given it. But what if I told you there is no tapping no really stop to the energy that flows into you. Meaning that I am you and you are me. That you are the tree outside you are your kids. Meaning that you have never seen all the energy around you. It grows in you it transfers to things you touch things that die. Energy is not limited to really anything but your own mind and body. We all have limits of what we can handle and that is what I think we can't ever get past is the full limits of ourselves. I know when I become a astral form I tapped into energy all around me. I know deep inside I can better myself but my body when I come back into physical form I am limited to my ownself.

That's the basic concept of Buddism. This world is an illusion. It's existence is only possible because that's how we perceive it at this time. (kind of like the movie Matrix)
Your ability to "tap" the energy totally depends on your ability to perceive the energy. One must also understand that there is a balance to all things. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. A positive and a negative. To use the one, you must at least understand the other.
Angelis asked In the context of this thread, we are not protecting the energy, we are acknowledging that it can be directed at a target. Think of it as an deep sea current or the jet stream. Both are strong forces that exist within the larger body. As a current can be created, it stands to reason it can be stopped or deflected.

though it may work for the time being, I'd be afraid of the reprocussions of using a darker being or deity. but, it is hard to say if you are being pushed.

I've always known there way a darker side to majick. I mean just look at Star Wars-it explained everything. XD. But even in my book about Green witchery, it doesn't sugar coat it or say:'there is no other majicks allowed but good majicks' If I believed that I don't think I'd be being true to myself.
