Sweet Grass is the most traditional smudge in North America and appropriate for any occasion. Asian traditions typically use various incense.
I don't recall reading anything about Celtic paths smudging. I do remember that the Norse people used Pine or Fir smudges but that was for delousing as I recall.
I have heard of people using different barks. If you look at the OBOD, they have a listing of the various tree's and their individual influences. I have used the various woods in bonfires to the same purpose.

talking of smudging, im wanting to take up magic again, still learning. I found a wonderful spot in the woods, there is a fantastic tree & thats where i would like to cast spells, just wandered if i should smudge the area first or is it necessary? I know its probably best to cleanse/bless the area first [sorry if ive posted this in the wrong thread]
