Scrying Basics with Multiple Mediums

Scrying is one of the oldest forms of divination. Cultures across the globe have used scrying as a means of seeing the future. There are many medias which can be used for scrying. For the purposes of this we will limit it to water, wine, mirror and ball.

A key portion of scrying is the ability to reach a meditative state. A point in the conscious between asleep and awake. It is this state in which we are the most open to seeing what may be or even what has happened. If you find it difficult to meditate, then working on that is the first step.

You will also need a combination of supplies of which I have listed suggestions. While they may not be necessary for all, they are each important in their own right. Please note I do not expect you to purchase everything on this list, but a combination of the elements needed is important.

While I have given what I use on a regular basis, do not feel you need to copy me, just copy the elements of the herbs and stones I use. It is those which are important. You will also, if you pursue this, want to dry your own flowers and herbs when they are in season and basically free to collect. No one will complain when you take dandelion from their yard, but before you pick flowers I advise you ask.

Flowers and herbs grown near you are better than those you may buy at a store. If you cannot find some of the herbs mentioned at your local metaphysical store, try your local health food store. Few of the stones listed are rare.

NOTE: the specific use for yew will be covered later. In the meantime, don’t use it.

Scrying Supplies

Mirror- most use a black mirror or a smoked mirror
Bowl(s) – various sizes, these can be as fancy or as simple as you wish, I use stainless steel mixing bowls much of the time
Fire – self explanatory
Crystal ball – best if you use quartz or obsidian, it is difficult to find a ball without occlusions, most people prefer occlusions within their ball to give them a better perception. Note if they tell you it is pure quartz and it has no occlusions and it isn’t a few hundred, they are lying.

Herbs – you want a combination of herbs, either fresh, dried or essential oil within candles. I prefer a combination of Basil, camphor, iris, chili pepper, crocus, dandelion, Echinacea, honeysuckle, hyssop, pansy and rose. However, I dry my own herbs and make candles with them for specific purposes. I will also float them in the water or wine in my bowl. You want to combine a few things with your herbs.

First and foremost is protection then psychic power, divination, wisdom, hex breaking (to avoid any negativity) and purification. Combine as you wish, but use herbs that have these properties.

Yew – raising the dead – for specific use

Stones – many feel stones are optional, however, they have some amazing qualities and I feel leaving them out is just bad practice. Always make use of what you have. If you don’t have the herb you need for divination, use a stone with vision properties. You can either surround your mirror, bowl or ball or place them in the bowl or on the mirror. I place mine in the bowl. I use apache tears, fluorite, iolite, moonstone and obsidian. I tend to burn amber incense instead of using the stone.

Amber-(yellow to orange) - cleanses the environment.
Apache Tears - (black) Physical & spiritual protection.
Azurite-(blue & green) powerful psychic freshens outlook.
Black Tourmaline-(black) Repels & protects against negativity, reverses black magicks & sends energy back where it came from. helps with disorientation.
Blue Topaz-(light blue) helps us see things in a more balanced way, assists in uniting us with the universe.
Chiastolite - (brown w/black cross in middle) Also known as "cross stone", protection stone, balances one's perception.
Fluorite - (purple,green,blue) Brings order to chaos, discernment & aptitude, concentration. This mineral brings higher realities into the physical plane and balances mental energies. Good for meditation. It actualizes, increases life forces and expands mental power. The cubic clusters symbolize advanced technological states in harmony with the universal principles. Fluorite clears the mind of stress from fast-paced living. The octahedrons represent the advancement of the individual in the modern world
Iolite - (purple) Used in the third eye to crown area for healing, during guided meditations & astral travel. Assists in change towards spiritual growth, strengthens and aligns the auric field and stimulates shamanic visions. It is considered powerful.
Jade - (green or green/black) Dream stone, fidelity, harmony, access to spirit world, releases limitations, luck, self-assuredness
Labradorite / Spectrolite - (grey-green w/blue sheen) Clears, balances and protects the aura. Helps provide clarity and insight into your destiny.
Moonstone-(white or tans)Vibrates to the moon energy, new beginnings, hopes and wishes, confidence, composure, assists in fulfilling destiny, and celestial communication.
Obsidian-(black) Increases immunity, changes luck, assists in facing buried issues, may be used as a crystal ball for scrying, creativity, used in shamanic ceremonies to remove disorders and transmute energies into white light.
Prehnite - (green) Facilitates spirit communication through meditation and visualization, increases energy, protection, prophesy, dreaming and remembering.
Quartz-(clear) Amplify and energizes energy, power stone, facilitates sending and receiving information, healer, assists communication with the earth, transforms thought into sound.
Snowflake Obsidian-(black w/white spots) Stone of protection both physical and spiritual, truth stone.
Yellow Calcite - (yellow) Energy amplifier, helps the body and mind remember information during channeling and astral experiences.

Scrying Mirrors - to make or buy?

There are some amazing artists out there who do work that is simply stunning. However, all the bells and whistles, while beautiful, are not necessary.

It is quite simple and inexpensive to make your own scrying mirror.

While the theory of using any shape is debatable, most experts agree that round or oval mirrors (like bowls) are the best.

You will need;

An oval or round picture frame with glass and backing.

Black paint, both gloss and matte will work, I prefer gloss

Optional items - clear drying glue forboth porous and non-porous surfaces, toothpicks, black paint, divinatory herbs, a working knowledge of runes including their shape and meaning, a light colored paint pen.

Disassemble mirror. Set frame and backing aside for reassembly.

If you wish to edge your mirror with dried herbs, those need to be glued on the inside of your clean glass and left to dry completely. I know it makes sense that you could just paint herbs into place without gluing them. IT DOESN'T WORK! Just trust me. I personally have painted dried petals and let them dry then put glue just around the edges to not have a big glue spot.

If you wish to edge your mirror with runes or other symbols, I have found that a paint pen works best for accuracy. You can use any light color. I find silver, gold and copper pens work really well and look beautiful.

Edge your mirror (again not necessary) first and allow paint or glue to dry completely. This is not a time of impatience, let it dry 24-48 hours.

Once dried, you can either paint your mirror with a brush or use spray paint. Place your glass on newspaper in a dust free area before painting. I personally use spray paint in multiple layers allowing each to dry between coats. Once the surface is completely and evenly black aloow it to dry for 24 hours.

Reassemble the glass and frame with the painted side on the inside of the frame.

You are done.

If you wish to make a smoked mirror, then you will want to use a grey paint and use spray paint as you can't create the same effect with brush paint.

Place your glass on newspaper in a dust free area before painting. From a distance of at least 2-3 feet lightly sweep the paint over the mirror until you can see the smokey effect. It may only take one to three sweeps. The mirror should not be completely covered like above, but should have a look of smoked glass. If you smoke your mirror you will want to paint the backing if it is a gross color because it will show thru.

Allow to dry completely then reassemble.

You now have a scrying mirror.

Ok, let's presume you have everything you need. You set yourself up somewhere that you can comfortably look into whatever you've chosen as your scrying medium. You have your candles, whatever herbs, stones and incense you prefer for second sight. You've meditated on what it is you want to know. Teh lights are dimmed and everything is set....

Now, you are sitting there and nothing happens. Well, that happens sometimes. Have you heard the saying "A watched pot never boils", the same holds true for scrying. It isn't something that you see by staring at it directly.

Have you ever seen those pictures that are made up of hundreds of blocks of color and you have to squint just the right way while almost crossing your eyes and suddenly the picture is obvious? THAT is scrying. At first it may be a mish mash of colors and shapes, trying to focus to hard on any one just makes all of them more blurry and unfocused. So you back up and kind of look at it sideways. Then once something catches your eye as identifiable, the whole picture is completely in focus.

Now, for some people random images is all you will get. For others it may play out like a film clip. It truly depends and there is no way to know before hand which it will be.

For myself, I get both depending on what medium I am using. The longest and clearest vision I ever saw was in the running water of a stream.

Don't worry if your first, second or heck even your 20th attempt is unsuccessful. It takes longer for some than others. If you truly feel drawn to scrying, then you will have the desire to accomplish it. If, after a while, you find yourself bored or no longer interested, it is most likely scrying never was the venue for you to see thru.

Now, let's presume you have accomplished what you set out to do. It is very important that you write everything down you can remember immediately. Images fade and impressions change. You want to be able to refer to your initial image and impression as well as anything that follows.

If the images you see have nothing to do with what you were trying to see, it may be that what you wanted to see is not what you needed to know. Many people are incapable of seeing their own future. I can't see for myself by scrying. So do not feel frustrated, we are just too close to the issue to see clearly when it comes to ourselves. Always write down anything you see and your impressions whether or not yu feel they are what you were looking for. You will find that those images were for a reason sometime later. I have yet to see anything useless or random that may have seemed so at the time.

It's been a while, but I had a couple sessions using one of those huge clear quartz crystals from Brazil. At first you think that a crystal probably won't work as good because of the multiple triangular surfaces. When something does come into view, most spectacular visionary images.

I've used multi faceted stones before, you are correct, when you do get something it is spectacular.

Khara, what do you suggest size-wise for quartz balls? Is anything too small or too large? Of course, I'm not going to whip out a marble and try to scry in it, but I do see lots of balls available that range from 1.5" to 3" or so and was wondering if those would work. (I currently have my eye on a huge almost perfect quartz ball in my local herb shop, but it costs more than my rent...) I haven't purchased one because I'm a bit on the pauper-ish side and I didn't want to waste my money.

I am a rock-hound and fire type of person, so I work with crystals/stones and candles/incense mostly, with a few other things thrown in for added punch. And I'm particularly drawn to wanting to scry in a crystal ball. I've tried other forms of divination, like tarot, but for some reason I seem to be perfectly incapable of learning the cards and a pendulum, which works well for me, but of course is limited to yes or no answers.

I found a store some years ago that had a variety of sizes on display. It was nice to be able to get a feel for the ball "in person". I settled for a 5" ball.

The one I'm looking at is about 7" and is absolutely gorgeous. But literally, on sale it was $450. The last time I went I stood there and stared at it for like 15 minutes. One of the ladies that worked in the shop came by and laughed and said she had one almost twice the size at home and it cost her over $800 (with her discount). Drool.

The one I have is slightly smaller than a baseball. I'll take pics this weekend and post them. I wouldn't get anything so small you feel you're literally crossing your eyes to concentrate on it.

This may sound odd coming from a guy, but....size doesn't matter.
