The Spanish explorers seemed to think there were 7 Mayan cities of gold in what is now the United States. It seems they got mighty disappointed. Dunno about that, the Spanish certainly found plenty of gold in the New World. I think their main disappointment was trying to get it back across the Atlantic without it all getting chored by British Privateers.

Thing is, Gold was so plentiful in what is now America, it wasn't of particularly great value. In Europe at the time, Gold was scarce, and most of the sources were played out. When the first Shiploads of gold were brought back to Europe, those who had access to it (Mostly the Royal families of Spain, England, their respective Noble Houses, and of course, the Vatican) invested it in expanding their influence in Europe. The returns on these investments were huge, and funded the renaissance, the start of the British and Spanish Empires, and the Industrial Revolution. The price of Gold in Europe was artificially kept high by the parties concerned while they invested, and by the time the cat was out of the bag, the Gold Standard was well and truly established. This was enough to provide the financial impetus that established the major Banking Houses that we know today. And they still control the Worlds economic markets to this day.

Know this is from almost a year ago but , the new program on H2 started out last week with a program on the Mayan ruins . When the host of the show tried to visit them in a National park he was told he could not go and see them it was not permitted.
The host is the same forensic geologist that examined the Kensington stone. It's on On Demand if you care to check it out . It's call America Unearthed.
