Don't look if you're squeamish though by now that warning is too late. I have two of these in my garden - they are facing each other. Five mins googling has told me they are wasp spiders and whilst they can bite they are not dangerous. Reassuring to know? Belly View Top View

I had those a couple of years ago...very creepy...and I am a severe Arachnaphobe...I had to give them names so I could coexist with them...
Our species in the US are called St. Andrews Cross spiders...
My father walked through a bush in my yard and one crawled onto his back...I was trying not to hyperventilate, keep him calm, and get my husband to get it off his back...my husband was backwashing the pool and blowing me off...telling me I'd have to wait...so I'm trying to tell my father to just stand still and not move...and not swat it off his back...while trying to convince my husband to come quickly...finally he comes over and realizes "which" spider was on his back and he felt like a jerk for not coming when I called...once my father saw what was on his back he almost passed out...the thing was about the size of my hand.

WOW PO - is that a humming bird? Tell him I know where there are two juicy spiders he'll enjoy! Lisa I find these ones a bit unnerving and I generally don't mind spiders. I am making a point of keeping out of their way but it didn't help that as I was led in bed last night thinking about what if one of the cats had passed through the webs and the spider was caught in their fur and then the cat jumped on the bed! LOL! No freaking wonder I have problems sleeping. Moondaughter_ you are MAD! ;D

WOW PO - is that a humming bird? Yes, it is a hummingbird. If it wasn't so late in the year I'd be running out to buy a hummingbird feeder. Perhaps next year. Every once in awhile I walk into a spider web near the trees where my car sits. When that happens I'm always paranoid that there is a spider on me and have to bush my hair and clothes and shake everything out. I never thought about the dogs carrying them in the house.

I have a hummingbird that comes to my garden a few times a day...he likes my Mexican Petunias and Canna Lillies...he's fun to watch...
I feel your pain PaganOne...Here in NC...we have some pretty big web weaving spiders...walking through one of those is like being wrapped in a blanket...this year hasn't been too bad...they were all kind enough to weave above head level...
I think we should have a thread to post pics of our "visitors"...it would be pretty neat to see what kind of wildlife everyone gets in their yards...especially since we seem to be from all over the world...my only really fun visitor lately was the owl...oh and a black vulture...he was huge...but not camera friendly....

im not a spider lover at all, but Hedge we get the same spiders here to!! Last one was in our front garden, i find that they rarely move from the center of their webs (thats fine by me ) I also give them names ( just so the kids don't see that I'm scared of them, don't want them getting my phobias!) last one was called "Sidney"" ..... about them biting.... well that explains why our Spanish neighbor wound poor Sidney round a stick and stamped on him ....... Now i would much prefer the humming bird as a visitor so beautiful!!!

We had a bear run through our yard early one morning and my husband and dog have been scared silly when out walking at night by herds of deer running around. They could hear the hoofs thundering and were scared they'd get run over. My husband held the dog in case the deer trampled on it.
My mom had a bear hang around that would often climb up her porch steps and look in the kitchen door. My sister screamed one morning when she saw it. My mom was upset with her as she said she might have excited the bear and it might have broken the door down and got in the house. Really?! Like who wouldn't scream seeing a bear look in the door at you, especially when you were at the door ready to open it to let the cats out.

Seriously though - that would make you jump wouldn't it - I suppose after the first few times you'd get used to it but as much as I LOVE Bears and would LOVE to see one - I would be very very cautious.
