Hi delano Well, first things first, find yourself a quiet spot where you won't be disturbed. You can light a candle or burn some incense, but this isn't essential. Make yourself comfortable. Some people like to sit cross-legged on the floor, others prefer to sit in a chair, me....I prefer to lay down somewhere (either the bed, or the sofa). Laying down somewhere doesn't always suit some people, as they may find themselves falling asleep...and that's not the idea LOL Clear your mind of everything, including the things that are troubling you. This can be difficult sometimes...but persevere with it. If you fail a few times, it doesn't matter. Keep at it. Some people have a special place they like to go to in their mind. This could be a woodland or forest glade, a deserted beach or a mountain top. When you've cleared your mind of all earthly thoughts, take yourself to your quiet place. If it's a forest glade, imagine the trees blowing in the breeze and the sun shining through the trees. Take note of all the flowers, trees and plants that grow there. Notice their colours and smell their scents. You might decide to explore your special place...let your mind take you there. If your special place is a deserted beach, hear the lapping of the water on the shore and feel the gentle breeze and the sun's heat on your body. You may hear seagulls in the distance. Notice the shells and pebbles that are lying around. Pick them up and examine each one...notice every detail. You see what I'm getting at? During a meditating session, some people like to have what is known as 'white noise' in the background...something like a fan, for instance. Others like to have soft music playing, or to chant mantra's to take them into a meditative state. Try out different things, see what works for you. The process of meditation can take from 10 minutes, up to half an hour or so. The idea of meditation is to calm your mind and reach inner peace. When you're done, picture yourself leaving wherever you are, and gradually become aware of your earthly self and your surroundings. It's important not to rush this process. You may also feel like something to eat or drink. Listen to your body. Remember, these are only suggestions. You may discover other methods that suit you better. Good luck with it

I have lately been trying a meditation that I've found helpful, especially when I haven't a lot of time. I imagine a white light appearing slowly where my center is, around my solar plexus. I imagine it growing and growing, filling my whole body with light and finally surrounding my body in an aura of white light. I try to hold that image for as long as possible, feeling the light as an energy that surrounds and goes through me. When the image starts to waver I pull all of the light back into my center. I usually feel very clear headed and energized when I'm done.
Good luck!

My son Sam offered me some insight this evening, as to the methods he uses to clear his mind in order to meditate. We happened to be talking about the subject earlier on.
This is what he said (in his words):
Imagine that there's a big screen, sectioned like a grid. In each square of the grid there is a memory ~ either past or present. I imagine that there is a man behind the grid.....he grabs the grid from behind.....and he tears it like paper. What is left, is total blackness...then suddenly the man disappears and my mind is blank.
Another method of his:
Imagine the same grid full of memories or things on my mind...suddenly, this black hole appears above the grid, and sucks the grid into itself and the whole thing implodes and disappears. Leaving my mind blank. My son is 9 years old.......
Out of the mouths of babes.........

I use a mantra to meditate (silently in my mind), I tried other methods but they didnt work for me, if thoughts appear I dont dwell on them and let them float by (rather like fluffy white clouds in a blue sky) I acknowledge them but gently let them go...if the mantra disappears I gently return to it. I meditate for around 20 minutes at a time once or twice a day, during that period I usually experience several periods of altered conciousness which are very difficult to explain except they are wonderful. I find it important to come out of the meditation slowly as it seems a shock to the system to suddenly get up do things.
I dont lie down but will either sit in a chair or crosslegged on the floor, sometimes I have candles and/or incense burning but more often than not I dont. If I possibly can I face east. With a bit of practice its possible to meditate anywhere, in a car, in the tube, on a bus (yes, honestly)....its not so easy but once youve learned to ignore whats around you its not that difficult.
However you meditate it should be easy, thats the main thing to remember, once you start to force the meditation you will almost certainly lose it. I was lucky to have a wonderful teacher and still go back every 6 month or so to meditate with her in fantastic peaceful surroundings.
