Hmmm......I've also heard the arguement that Air is in the North, the home of the North wind.
Fire in the South, the direction of the equater and warmer countries,
Water to the East, due the Atlantic Ocean and Earth to the West due the large land mass call Europe.
Geographically that makes sense if you live in England.
And, from all that I can determine, working with the elements specifically is something unique to England and western Europe.
