I recently borrowed this question in my wondering. I liked the wording and thought I'd post it here for your consideration;
If there's only One Life and we're all part of it, why we are having this experience as individuals who have to deal with the ups and downs of daily life? If Nature is all present, all powerful, and all knowing, why does it take the form of stock brokers and dentists, or homeless people and homemakers, each of whom represents only part of the great picture of life? To put it bluntly, why are we here?

Why are we here? ....because we're here. ROLL THE BONES! (A quote from one of my favourite Rush tracks). ROLL THE BONES ~ in full: Well, you can stake that claim -- Good work is the key to good fortune Winners take that praise Losers seldom take that blame If they don’t take that game And sometimes the winner takes nothing We draw our own designs But fortune has to make that frame We go out in the world and take our chances Fate is just the weight of circumstances That’s the way that lady luck dances Roll the bones Why are we here? Because we’re here Roll the bones Why does it happen? Because it happens Roll the bones Faith is cold as ice -- Why are little ones born only to suffer For the want of immunity Or a bowl of rice? Well, who would hold a price On the heads of the innocent children If there’s some immortal power To control the dice? We come into the world and take our chances Fate is just the weight of circumstances That’s the way that lady luck dances Roll the bones Jack -- relax. Get busy with the facts. No zodiacs or almanacs, No maniacs in polyester slacks. Just the facts. Gonna kick some gluteus max. It’s a parallax -- you dig? You move around The small gets big. it’s a rig. It’s action -- reaction -- Random interaction. So who’s afraid Of a little abstraction? Can’t get no satisfaction From the facts? You better run, homeboy -- A fact’s a fact From nome to rome, boy. What’s the deal? spin the wheel. If the dice are hot -- take a shot. Play your cards. show us what you got -- What you’re holding. If the cards are cold, Don’t go folding. Lady luck is golden; She favors the bold. that’s cold. Stop throwing stones -- The night has a thousand saxophones. So get out there and rock, And roll the bones. Get busy!

yeah Goth!! We're here to fill a vacant spot in the cosmos, for without each of us the universe would collapse. Because of the food chain. In other words, to keep the balance of good and evil, light and dark. For every homemaker, we need a stock broker. For every attorney, we have a homeless person ......... And, for every blindly obedient person who just goes with the flow, there is a Watershield out there, asking questions about life. ;D

I offer this for your consideration
If you have ever watched Startrek, Deep Space nine, you will be familiar with the Founders. A race of beings that exist primarily in a non corporeal state, merged together in a vast sea of "being". One shared mind. From time to time, an individual may separate from the whole to accomplish a specific task. That individual is, while separate, still part of the whole, an expression of the whole.
In some respects thats how I see this existence. The Cosmic Energy flows in all things and this existence is an expression of the energy.
Consider, if the founder always remained merged, they would always have a common emotion, knowledge, dream... every thing would be "consistent". There could be no creativity, no originality, hence no growth. The fundamental instinct of all things is to evolve. I conceive that the energy is a living evolving entity. In order to create original thought, our existence is an expression of that instinct. Each of us has a potential to experience a vast and varied set of circumstance, all for the purpose of returning to the source with additional "data" to promote that evolution.

We are here to focus the intent of spirit. It is with ego that you can give the soul intent and direction. It is with physical existence that we can come to understand good and evil for if we were all one soul then we would all be neutral. It is only with physical forms that anything we do as life matters, when there are individuals who make decisions. Furthermore i do not believe that the ultimate goal of life should be to acheive enlightenment or nirvana to the level that we no longer have a physical form. I think that the true test of life is coming to understand the duality that is the very essence of all existence. It is easy to be a completely earthly being, only focussing on the day to day of life, also it is easy to simply be spiritual neglecting life or hiding from it. It is when we come to understand our soul and use that knowledge in application to improving not only our own lives but the lives of those around us that we accomplish the desired task. As beings with souls as well as sentient thought we are capable of practically anything, I think we're here to figure out how to do that, use that knowledge to help others, and in turn spread that knowledge to those willing to listen.

That's an interesting perspective. In my understanding of what you wrote, you suggest that the the physical body controls and directs the spirit. I see it the other way around. After all, if the spirit were to leave the body we encounter a thing called death.
I see it that the body is a vehicle for the spirit. The brain is the CPU which translates the personality of the spirit into the personality of the body.
You suggest the a purpose of being is to understand the difference between good and evil. I think you will find that many people will tell you that there is no good or evil, and that these are concepts imposed on us by our up bringing. Persona;;y, I think both views are somewhat correct. There is no good or bad as global concepts, but how we use energy or interact and deal with others, based on our own moral code implies a positive or negative aspect. Hence the definition of good and bad must be a personal interpretation.
In any event, it's all personal opinion based on what ever belief structure you developed within. I'll know better when I get there.... ;D

We will never really understand why we are here. But in my opinon we are here to watch over each other and try to help ourselves and others to find a lasting peace in our lives. Or as my wife say's" to drive her crazy"

Just to throw this question at you - why are the animals, birds, fish and insects here? What role do you see them playing in the cosmic energy?

From my previous post: Consider, if the founder always remained merged, they would always have a common emotion, knowledge, dream... every thing would be "consistent". Is there a difference in the energy of a tree or a person? Both come from the same source and will return to the same source.
