What is it, when you dream on purpose and record it? Or am I way off?

Lucid dreaming is the conscious perception of one's state while dreaming, enabling a more cogent ("lucid") control over the content and quality of the experience. The complete experience from start to finish is a lucid dream. (taken from wikipedia)
In essence, you are asleep, but you are aware you are asleep and in a dream. Because you are aware, you can take control of the events It is very much different from astral projection. I've only done that a few times, many year ago with the aid of my guides. However lucid dreaming i do all the time. It's great recreation for the mind. In a sense, the difference between AP and LD is simlar to being very awake or very asleep.
You may dream, and when you wake up, remember that dream and record it. That just dreaming. But in Lucid dreaming, your in a movie inside your mind. Your the writer and director.
It's thought that most if not all nightmares are in fact lucid dreams gone wrong. The person in not aware they can control the events and their own fear of the unknown is manifest in that dream.
Have you ever drifted off to sleep, but you can hear the people around you talking. You hear yourself snore. You can hear yourself saying, I must stop that before I get a sore throat. You suddenly wake up and realize you were out 10 or 15 minutes. In a way that's how it starts. You know your asleep but your aware of whats going on around you. The trick is to stay asleep and develop a situation you feel comfortable in.

*Agrees with Watershield* Lucid dreaming is when you are aware that you're dreaming, and are able to control the dream in which ever way you want to.
Sometimes, when I'm lucid dreaming, I'll decide I want to fly. I literally just jump up, hold my arms out, and there I am....soaring high above the rooftops ;D

Not really. When you day dream, you are awake. If your like me, you might run various images in your head like seeing a movie, but your still detached from what is happening. You still control the script but it's basically third person.
When you lucid dream or dream weave, the dream is first person. Your not seeing the movie, your in it.

So, does lucid dreaming only occur when you are aware of your surroundings, even when you are asleep? What about when you are alseep, but you're not aware of your surroundings, and instead you are only aware that you are in a dream, and can wake youreself up whenever you need to? Also, is it lucid dreaming when you aren't entirely capable of controlling the goings on in the dream? Sorry if I'm asking so many questions. I'm just trying to get clarification. Also, this may go off the subject of lucid dreaming, but do any of you have a feeling the your dream world is more real than this material plane? I just kind of feel that way lately for some reason, and it's confusing me.

If you are asleep, dreaming, but not aware you are asleep...then it's not lucid Lucid is the act of being aware.
You don't need to be aware of every aspect of the dream. Just that you do control it and can manipulate the situation.
Does an actor on the stage see the stage hand behind him? No, but he does see the cup in his hand or the page he is reading. Because he is aware of the page in the book, he can close the book, drop it to the floor. The events to follow are his choice.

As to the second part of your question, there is some possibility that what you are experiencing might be astral projection. You may want to read up on that subject to see if it fits your experience. I have experienced AP but that was a long time ago and not by my doing. (long story)
There are several posts on this board dealing with the subject and maybe one of the other members will jump in here and provide some insight.

Interesting. What's lucid dreaming used for? Is it a way of making manifest desires?

Manifesting desire.....yes I suppose that is one aspect.
As is recreation for those grey cells or possibly a means of working through a problem.

I have had Lucid dreams occasionally but i find most of the time i try to solve an issue or problem that i have in my wakened state. For example, if i am having a problem coming up with a dinner special for the restaurant , i tend to find it in my dream, not whether or not you consider that Lucid i don't know.
